Reading Notebook week three
Pg 152- this is the passage where Bilbo tells the dwarves about the ring after they defeat the spiders & I was just surprised that the dwarves respected him more because of the ring. But, it makes sense that the dwarves felt this way. I also saw this as Bilbo "growing up" & rising to his expectations.
Pg 153- "Knowing the truth about the vanishing did not lessen their opinion of Bilbo at all..." Same thing, just surprised it was completely opposite of what we were expecting.
Pg 155- "...for they did not love dwarves..." Does anyone like the dwarves? Seriously... I thought they were pretty nice guys.
Pg 161- "...he soon realized that if anything was to be done, it would have to be done by Mr. Baggins, alone and unaided." We all have times & moments like these when we realize we just HAVE to do it ourselves & there's no way around it.
Pg 174- this is the part where they're hidden in the casks & Bilbo is on the raft & he sees the mountain for the first time, and I was expecting it to be a hint of relief for him, like that he's getting closer to his destination, but it says, "...now he did not like the look of it in the least." So I was surprised by that.
Pg 175- GANDALF IS COMING IN SEARCH OF THORIN'S COMPANY YAAAAYY. I was so happy when I read that!
Reading Notebook week two
Pg 84- so bilbo is escaping the Goblins & he slips through the legs of the captain, I just thought that was funny.
Pg 84- the goblins notice there is a shadow by the door while Bilbo is invisible & stuck there & I was surprised he still had a shadow
Pg 85- "Bilbo had escaped the goblins, but he did not know where he was." I was emotionally distressed at this point and wondering why Gandalf couldn't just be there to rescue him.
Pg 91- "and all the whole the forest-gloom got heavier and the forest-silence deeper." I loved this imagery.
Pg 106- ""I always meant to see you all safe (if possible) over the mountains," said the wizard, "and now by good management and good luck I have done it. Indeed we are now a good deal farther east than I ever meant to come with you, for after all this is not my adventure."" NO GANDALF DON'T LEAVE THEM. I also thought that this was symbolic of a life happening for sure. Like leaving your parents home or something, you can't have someone to protect you always.
Reading notebook Week one
Page 14- "To seek the pale enchanted gold" one of the lyrics in the song they sang that explained their ensuing quest.
Page 15- "To claim our long-forgotten gold." This again shows their want to reclaim what is theirs and shows a character trait of theirs; a fierce devotion to what is theirs.
Page 16- "he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves and wear a sword instead of a walking stick." I saw this as foreshadowing the decision Bilbo does make
Page 16- "in a tone that seemed to show that he guessed both halves of the hobbit's mind." Explains Thorin's personality and wisdom well.
Page 18- the second to last paragraph, I think explains Bilbo's personality well and that it is very hilarious and it shows his constant struggle between his different "bloodlines".
Page 19- "Tell me what you want done, and I will try it, if I have to walk from here to the East if East and fight the wild Were-worms in the Last Desert." I think this says a lot about Bilbo's character and what he stands for.
Page 34- "and yet somehow he could not go straight back to Thorin and Company emptyhanded." Thought this demonstrated the idea of "rising to expectations" very well, that Bilbo knew that he had people back there who were expecting something out of him.
Page 43- "Dark and drear it looked, though there were patches of sunlight on its brown sides, and behind its shoulders the tips of smowpeaks gleamed." This personifies the literal and their personal battles and trip that lies before them.
Page 47- "He loved elves, though he seldom met them; but he was a little frightened of them too." I think this shows Bilbo's bravery and curiosity for new and different things
Page 49- "as kind as summer" and "Their clothes were mended as well as their bruises, their tempers and their hopes." I just like these and how they were written. I think they're small but add a lot to the writings.
Page 59- explains the Goblins and their skills and I was just wondering if the author designed each of these "races" to echo a racial stereotype or something that is real in our world.
Page 62- "and though he could not do everything, he could do a great deal for friends in a tight corner." This is speaking of Gandalf and I think it says a lot about his character. Lots of great character development
